New processing plant – second to none
Although LYSI’s operations have been ongoing for several decades, the new processing plant inaugurated in the autumn of 2005 elevated LYSI to the status of one of the most advanced processors of its kind in the world. The plant is uniquely equipped with the highly specialized production units needed for complete cod liver oil processing, including units to separate the oil from the liver, separate water and impurities from the oil, and detach valuable components by distillation.
The equipment has been specifically designed to minimize oxidation of the oil and to remove taste and smell in the final product by natural means. This unique processing and packaging plant makes it feasible for the company to offer a variety of products in response to customer requests and requirements, all derived from cod liver oil and other marine lipids.
In 2008 LYSI started production of fish oil concentrates in a highly automated production line with annual capacity of 300 metric tons. This addition will strengthen LYSI's product portfolio, and the company's extended experience in refining of fish oils helps to make the new concentrates of high quality and purity.
Flexible production of specialty oils
As requests for new types of fish oils have increased, the company has commenced import of crude marine lipids from other parts of the world for processing in Iceland. As a result the company has taken a leadership position in its field, achieved optimal utilisation of equipment and know-how, and offers its customers a modern extended range of natural health products. Backed by a global network of contacts and sources for the purchasing, handling and marketing of cod liver oil and other marine lipids, the company is set to maintain its leadership position in the future.
Access to raw materials
Vibrant fisheries in the pristine and pure waters surrounding Iceland are an extremely important source of raw materials for LYSI. The cod is Iceland’s most famous fish, and nowhere in the world is capelin as plentiful. In addition to local raw materials, LYSI also relies on imported raw materials and has built up strong business relations with countries such as Norway, the Faroe Islands, Thailand, Chile and Mexico.
